A Manchester United icon found himself at the centre of a cheating storm after spending the night with Katie Price.
The 47-year-old glamour model is back in the headlines after her lightning-fast wedding to businessman Lee Andrews in Dubai - the mum-of-five's fourth marriage after previously getting hitched to Peter Andre, Alex Reid and Kieran Hayler. But in the mid 1990s, when she was making her name as an up-and-coming glamour model, she was thrust into the limelight when a night she spent with a former England ace became front page news.
United Treble winner Teddy Sheringham, now 59, was known for scoring away from football and was the first celebrity to be linked to Jordan when she was only 19, and he was 31 and a household name thanks to his exploits in the Premier League with Tottenham. But the problem was, she wasn't single, with her secret date leading to an almighty row.
Price was accused of cheating on her electrician boyfriend Gary, who walked out on her after the affair emerged, when she spent a night in a hotel with Sheringham.
In her autobiography Being Jordan, she told how her agent had set her up with Sheringham and they arranged to meet in Essex for a drink behind her boyfriend's back.
She said she wore a "skintight leopard-skin dress" for the date and felt overdressed and flustered when the footballer arrived in his blue Mercedes wearing jeans and a sweatshirt.
Price said she had a great time chatting and flirting with "charming" Sheringham in the bar, before having missed her last train home, they headed to a hotel. She had decided against sex on a first date, but said "we both stripped to our underwear".
She said: "I was wearing a sexy matching bra and knickers set in black lace. Immediately we got into bed together and started kissing passionately."
Price said the striker was a "fantastic kisser" and was "obviously desperate to make love" but she held back and they "kissed and cuddled" for the rest of the night before the next morning heading to football training after agreeing to meet again.
But within 24 hours, their rendezvous was front page news – headlined: “ON MY BED, TED”. Price said she felt "sick to my stomach".
Devastated, Price couldn't understand how the papers had gotten hold of all the steamy details, even down to her black lacy undies. "But I haven't told anyone what happened," she later explained, forgetting that she had opened up about the night with her sly agent.
The incident ended her relationship with Sheringham before it had started. The United legend got cold feet and never spoke to her again, believing he had been the victim of a "kiss and tell".
“To this day I think Teddy Sheringham thinks that I sold that story and I swear on my life I never. I was so gutted because I did like him and I didn't do anything,” Price insisted.
Speaking on The Katie Price Show in 2024 about the fling with the England international, Price told her sister: “That agent helped me meet Teddy Sheringham but then she sold the story to The Sun.
“The front page said ‘On my bed, Ted.’ She set it up and never told anyone about it.”
Despite Price’s sadness, it was her boyfriend Gary who had to endure the heartbreak of the incident. “The first I knew of her affair with Teddy was when I saw it on the front of the papers,” he said. “I was totally humiliated. She denied everything and begged me to stay with her. But the rot had set in.”
In her book, Price said how he confronted her with a copy of the paper in his hands, screaming "what's all this - what have you been up to?" And when they tried to smooth things over, if she went out to pubs, men would chant "Teddy, Teddy, Teddy", while if they watched football together, it was the elephant in the room.
After Sheringham and Gary both called it off, Price started a relationship with Gladiator star Ace, real name Warren Furman, but they split after three years in 1999 despite the pair getting engaged with a £3,500 diamond ring.
It wasn’t long until Price was spotted alongside another United striker when she started her tumultuous relationship with Dwight Yorke in 2001.
The couple had a child together but Yorke is estranged from son Harvey, who is partially blind, autistic and has Prader-Willi syndrome. Price has repeatedly slammed Yorke for being absent from his life.
