The Los Angeles Lakers continue to reshape their roster during the 2025 offseason, with reports indicating strong front-office interest in Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins. Although similar trade rumors have circulated before, no concrete deal has yet materialized.
Senior Bleacher Report journalist Eric Pincus recently outlined a potential three-team trade scenario. Under this framework, the Lakers could acquire Andrew Wiggins, JaMychal Green, and Drew Timme, the Heat would receive Rui Hachimura and Dalton Konecht, and the Brooklyn Nets would pick up Matisse Thybulle along with Miami’s 2026 second-round pick.
A key subplot is the historical connection between Wiggins and current Lakers star LeBron James. When Cleveland drafted Wiggins first overall, LeBron’s decision to return to the Cavaliers led to Wiggins being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Since then, Wiggins has consistently raised his intensity against LeBron, eager to prove himself on the court. In retrospect, the Cavaliers’ move proved shrewd—LeBron returned to lead the team to four Finals appearances, capturing the 2016 championship.
Despite their past tensions, the Lakers’ front office appears intent on pairing Wiggins and LeBron, sparking widespread speculation. Analysts suggest the move could signal the team’s willingness to finally accommodate some of LeBron’s roster demands. Following the end of the Buss family’s tenure and the arrival of new ownership in 2025, the Lakers’ strategic approach seems to be shifting.
At 40 years old, LeBron has opted into his $52.6 million player option, a controversial yet contractually legitimate decision. Bringing in Wiggins, who is in his prime at 30, offers multiple benefits. Last season, Wiggins averaged 19 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1 block per game while earning $28 million—a highly cost-effective addition by modern NBA standards. More importantly, with young star Luka Doncic emerging as the team leader, the Lakers may be preparing for a post-LeBron era. Wiggins’ arrival would not only strengthen the team immediately but could also facilitate a smoother leadership transition in the coming years.
